Subjunctive Mood (умовний і бажальний спосіб) — це граматична категорія, яка виражає не реальні факти, а бажане, необхідне, уявне або можливе лише гіпотетично.
1. Mandative Subjunctive (Вимоги, накази, поради)
Використовується після дієслів волевиявлення (demand, insist, suggest, recommend, propose, require, ask) та безособових прикметників і іменників (it is crucial, essential, vital, important, a demand). У таких реченнях дієслово завжди стоїть у формі базового інфінітива (Base Form) — без закінчення -s для третьої особи однини і без частинки to.
Приклади:
• The supervisor insisted that the report be submitted by Friday. (Не is і не was)
• It is vital that every participant follow the security rules.
2. Past Subjunctive (Нереальне теперішнє та гіпотези)
Застосовується у конструкціях з I wish / If only (для теперішнього часу), після As if / As though (нібито) та It’s high time / It’s about time (давно час). Головна особливість — для всіх займенників (включно з I, he, she, it) з дієсловом to be використовується виключно форма were.
Приклади:
• I wish I were more experienced in project management.
• He talks about the company as if he owned it.
• It’s high time we started implementing new strategies.
3. Past Perfect Subjunctive (Жаль про минуле)
Використовується у випадках, коли ми висловлюємо жаль про події в минулому, які вже не можна змінити. Формується за допомогою конструкції I wish / If only + Past Perfect.
Приклад: She wishes she had consulted a specialist before making that decision.
